Sherwood Park Museum
What a fun morning learning about how people before us lived.
We started the morning listening to a story. The story was interactive and students had to use big loud animal voices to communicate with the owl.
We then got into our groups and toured 4 different areas in the museum.
The first area was an old one room school house. Students sat in old desks and listened to an older gentleman who went to school in a one room school house that housed grades 1-9. He shared with the students stories about walking to school (uphill both ways), and how all the students had to work together. The older kids would help the younger ones and the class really became like a family.
The second area of the museum that we toured was room with a beautiful painted mural that wrapped around the entire room. The mural told the story of indigenous people who lived off the land. Food, medicine, clothing and housing came from their land and how they had to be resourceful.
The third area of the museum was an old general store. Students were given cards of old items that they had to find. Students learned that an old general store sold everything from cereal, to buttons to car batteries. This one general store is where everyone would come to get all the items they needed. There was no such thing as the local walmart or sobeys.
The fourth area of the museum was an old kitchen with a wood burning stove, a water basin for the sink and ask your children where the washroom was in the home. They were amazed that people had to go outside to use the outhouse.
The final activity was a laundry relay race! Students had to choose a clothing item and scrub it on the wash board 5 times and run to the clothes line to hang their laundry. They learned that laundry in the "olden days" was much tougher than it is today!
In class, we have continued to talk about hibernation and bears in general. Students enjoyed making two crafts this week based on stories we read.
The first craft was a bear in his cave, and these bears do not want to come out till Spring.
The second craft was a polar bear craft that they enjoyed doing with their buddies.

We ended off the week today with a few minutes of yoga! Google cosmic kids yoga. They love it!
