Sparky, Shapes and Pumpkins!!

Image
The week started with a visit from Sparky the fire dog! He was a BIG HIT and all the students loved meeting him. Students learned that if there ever was a fire in their homes, they should know a meeting place outside that they would meet their family, to stop, drop and roll, and to get out and stay out. Forms came home with each student this week highlighting in more detail everything we learned. Students then enjoyed some buddy time and made some shape monsters. It was a little Halloween mixed with a little math. You can look for these shape monsters in your child's evidence of learning scrapbooks that will be coming home this week.  We also learned about pumpkins! Students knew a lot about this large vegetable and shared many descriptive words in a group discussion.  Students also enjoyed a fun craft! We cut an apple in half and learned that it makes a great pumpkin stamp! Once they dried, students enjoyed making their pumpkins into jac...

Finally... some nice fall weather!

Apples!

We all had a fun week exploring apples! I incorporated some language based learning, math, some science and we ended off the week with some cooking and a yummy apple pie! We began by talking about descriptive words. Students had a variety of different adjectives that could be used to describe an apple! They even learned the 4 parts of an apple (skin, core, flesh and the stem). See if they can tell you the 4 parts? Students were also challenged this week to build a bridge that could hold an apple. It was really neat to see how students had to work together in a group to decide what the best plan would be. They soon realized they couldn’t make separate bridges, but had to create one bridge as a group that could hold their apple. Team work!! I set up a second tinker lab activity that had the students build an apple tree. They placed small pieces of play doh on the end of the branches and stick buttons for apples on to the tree. They then had to count the apples on the tree. ...
