Apples!

We all had a fun week exploring apples! I incorporated some language based learning, math, some science and we ended off the week with some cooking and a yummy apple pie!
We began by talking about descriptive words. Students had a variety of different adjectives that could be used to describe an apple! They even learned the 4 parts of an apple (skin, core, flesh and the stem). See if they can tell you the 4 parts?

Students were also challenged this week to build a bridge that could hold an apple. It was really neat to see how students had to work together in a group to decide what the best plan would be. They soon realized they couldn’t make separate bridges, but had to create one bridge as a group that could hold their apple. Team work!!

I set up a second tinker lab activity that had the students build an apple tree. They placed small pieces of play doh on the end of the branches and stick buttons for apples on to the tree. They then had to count the apples on the tree.

We explored the concept of sinking and floating and students were asked to make a prediction on whether an apple would sink or float. They learned that there is no wrong or right prediction, as long as they are using their brain power to come up with their answer. They were very excited to put the apple in the container to see what would happen. Ask them if an apple with sink or float? I know they all know the answer now!

Students had buddy time this week and they completed a counting apples math booklet that went home on Thursday. They also placed an apple dice game! The kindergarten students seem to really be enjoying their time with their buddy and it is sure reciprocated by the grade 7’s!

It was also read in week this week and we had a special guest come and read to the kindergarten students! Mr. Kucy read 2 stories to the kindergarteners and they absolutely loved having him read to them!

Lastly, we ended off a great week with making apple pies! Students brought in their apples and we made a bar graph showing how many red, green and yellow apples we had. We then got busy preparing the apples for apple pies! While they smelled the delicious  pies cooking, they completed an apple investigation sheet in their groups! They used all their learning from the week to answer many of the questions on the investigation page. Thank you to the parents who helped with the apple pies!
