We are God's Masterpiece

The kindergarten social curriculum focuses on the theme of “ I am Unique”. We read a story this week titled “ All about Me”, which showed that we all look different, which makes us unique! There was a mirror in the back of the book and each child shared what they liked about themselves. Their answers were precious! I took this theme and combined it with our EICS division theme, “We are God’s Masterpiece”.  We all created a unique hand print and made a beautiful masterpiece!

We jumped right into phonics this week! Students learned the sounds P and U. I hope many of them showed you a painting action for P and pointed up for U. The research from animated literacy shows that,
"We all remember things best when we move our muscles and stimulate our emotions. How many of us can learn to ride a bike, put it away for 20 years, and still ride it on our first attempt? The recent discovery of “mirror neurons” has helped us understand why it is critical for young children to use gestures and imitate the actions of adults in a language rich environment in order to develop both language skills and emotional security."

We combined the sounds P and U to form the words up and pup. Throughout the year we will be doing many guided drawings. This teaches several important concepts besides learning to draw. Following directions, spatial awareness on their page and as time goes on, we will begin labeling our pictures with nouns, adjectives and adverbs.
"As soon as students have experienced success at reading and writing single word labels, they begin forming phrases by using adjectives, verbs, and adverbs to describe their drawings and name actions that the objects depicted in their drawings might perform."

On Friday, we did a guided drawing of a pup! This was our first drawing, but I was very impressed with many of the drawings! I decided to keep them so I can compare them to our last drawing of kindergarten! This is going to act as a great comparison to see how far your kindergartner is going to come this year. Here are a couple of the drawings from Friday.

I hope you enjoyed this post!
